CRYSTAL CHEMISTRY STUDIES
Abstract
Research has been concerned with (1) the study of the crystal chemistry of a series of rare earth-rhenium oxide compounds. Six new phases have been found and identified by x-ray and electron probe analysis; (2) Study of the binary system V-O has been completed and described in a Technical Report 'Phase Equilibrium Studies and Transitions in the System V2O3-V2O5.' Five out of seven intermediate stable phases found behave like antiferromagnetic materials, having different Neel points; (3) Work has continued to synthesize SmO and EuO. Methods such as reduction of the sesquioxides, oxidation of the metals and reaction of the metal with the sesquioxides have been tried. So far, SmO has been prepared successfully only by the latter method.
