AN ANALYSIS OF THE ECONOMIC RISK OF THE EXPONENTIAL ASSUMPTION IN RELIABILITY TESTING.
Abstract
The characteristics of the exponential time to failure distribution are compared with those of Weibull life distributions with shape parameter greater than one. Computer simulation is used to determine the probability of accepting an exponential life distribution hypothesis when the distributions are Weibull. An economic model is then used to show that, for items meeting reliability specifications, the risk may increase with the shape parameter when the exponential life distribution is assumed and sampling plans based on it are used.
