HIGH AMPLITUDE CURRENT AND OPTICAL TRANSMISSION OSCILLATIONS IN CDS SINGLE CRYSTALS.

Abstract

Low frequency current oscillations with current modulation of two orders of magnitude or more were observed in CdS single crystal platelets under conditions of high electric field and illumination with monochromatic light near the fundamental absorption edge. In conjunction with the current oscillations the optical transmission in the entire region between the electrodes varied almost homogeneously. These new oscillations are observed in certain crystals in which periodic transitions occur between 'n' and 's' shaped negative resistance regimes. The oscillations occur only in crystals whose temperature coefficient of photoconductivity is positive, followed by a negative region at increased temperature and only if the temperature without field was in the region of positive coefficient. The observed frequencies of oscillations were in the range from 0.1 to 5.0 cps, increasing with increasing light intensity and voltage.
