MEASUREMENT OF VORTEX SEPARATION. PART I: TWO-DIMENSIONAL CIRCULAR AND ELLIPTIC BODIES.

Abstract

An experimental investigation of vortex separation about two-dimensional circular and elliptic cylinders using the hydrogen bubble technique for flow visualization is discussed. Data on the time-dependent motion of the separation point of the vortex feeding sheet are presented. Semi-empirical formulas are determined which correlate the time-dependent motion of the separation point as well as its position on an elliptic body of arbitrary axis ratio. Most of the data presented are for turbulent flow, but by changing the constants in the semi-empirical equations, they may be made applicable in the laminar regime as well. (Author)
