RESONANCE ENERGY AND IONIC ATTRACTION IN HETEROMOLECULES,

Abstract

The postulate that the valence bond resonance stabilization energy of a heteromolecule is due to Coulomb attraction between the partially ionized atoms is examined with the help of simple molecular orbital theory. Although both quantities are quadratic in the electronegativity difference the equating of the constants of proportionality cannot readily be given a theoretical justification. (Author)
