APPARENT-WEIGHT MEASUREMENTS OF ROCKET PAYLOAD AND TEST STRUCTURES.

Abstract

The report describes a series of apparent-weight measurements of (a) two static thrust cell-test bay assemblies, located at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL), (b) the ABL X-248 motor installed in the static firing stand, and (c) several 'representative' rocket payloads. The procedure used in obtaining these measurements is described in some detail. Since this information was desired to ensure greater confidence in the quantitative levels of motor-induced oscillatory forces (600 cps) observed during earlier firings, the behavior at this frequency was studied most closely. However, the results also show how these several structures may be modeled, mathematically, for analysis pruposes. The studies illustrate the usefulness of these mechanical-impedance type measurements when dynamic loads are of importance. (Author)
