A STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF CRYSTALLINE ELECTRIC FIELDS ON FERROMAGNETS.

Abstract

The one-ion theory of anisotropy is examined on the basis of symmetry. The most general spin-hamiltonian for the energy levels of a magnetic ion in a cubic crystalline environment is constructed and the origin of the new terms which appear investigated. The contribution of the new terms to the anisotropy constant k-1(T) is derived. (Author)
