MICROMINIATURIZED MTI GROUP AN/GPA (XW-2).

Abstract

An engineering model of MTI Group AN/GPA(XW-2) was constructed that demonstrates the feasibility of manufacturing thin-film and monolithic canceler circuits with electrical characteristics and reliability in excess of tube or transistorized equipment. The model is 54 cubic inches in volume compared with a transistorized version of 1,296 cubic inches. The MTI group uses a nonreal-time clutter filter (range-gated filter) approach whereas the transistor version uses a real-time filter (delay line). There are 100 range gated filter modules, each providing a 1/2-mile MTI range increment. These modules are of hybrid construction; monolithic integrated chips connected to each other on a thin-film substrate. The MTI group operates satisfactorily over a temperature range from 0 to +72C. The design and construction is such that a cancellation ratio and subclutter visibility of 45 db can be easily obtained. Experiments with this unit show the definite feasibility of manufacturing microminiature canceler equipment. (Author)
