PROTECTIVE PERFORMANCE OF STANNOUS FLUORIDE-ZIRCONIUM SILICATE PROPHYLAXIS PASTES.

Abstract

Laboratory studies established that freshly prepared zirconium silicate-stannous fluoride prophylaxis pastes were highly effective in protecting human enamel from acid decalcification. While these pastes did not maintain peak protective potency when aged over the 8-week experimental period, there was an indication of stability in the more concentrated pastes for the first 4 days. Further study will clarify the nature of this apparent short-term maintenance and subsequent loss of effectiveness. The operator who wishes to employ zirconium silicate as a paste abrasive can be assured that, in a fresh mix with stannous fluoride solution, a high degree of protection is provided the enamel surface.
