INVESTIGATION OF ELECTROPOLISHING SOLUTION.

Abstract

The report covers an investigation of the electropolishing properties of commercial fluoboric acid alone and in combination with various additives including glycerine, citric acid, gluconic acid, oxalic acid, boric acid, sodium ferrocyanide, chromic acid, and acetic acid. Evaluation was made primarily by voltage current relationships and also by the use of a specialized ten-section cell. Results indicated rapid metal removal but the range of voltage through which electropolishing was achieved was narrow and the polishing results obtained were generally poor. On the basis of the results of the investigation, it does not appear that the solution described in the U. S. Patent no. 2,986,499 can be directly applied to the electropolishing of the internal surface of rifle barrels. (Author)
