THE IONOSPHERE BELOW 100 KM (D-REGION) A SIMPLE MODEL.

Abstract

The parameters involved in the formation of the D region of the ionosphere are discussed in detail in an attempt to deduce the most reasonable values for them given our present knowledge of the ionosphere at heights of 40-100 km. The ionization due to solar radiation and from other sources, chiefly cosmic radiation, is also discussed and a model that includes the effect of solar cycle variations is derived. Several calculations, using the suggested values for the parameters, are made, including a comparison to an experimental profile for which the agreement is found to be remarkably good. Finally, mention is made of possible stratification due to winds and turbulence at D-region heights. (Author)
