ON SAINT-VENANT'S PRINCIPLE AND THE TORSION OF SOLIDS OF REVOLUTION.

Abstract

This report contains a quantitative study of Saint-Venant's principle within the context of the pure axisymmetric torsion of bodies of revolution in classical elastostatics. Explicit estimates are established for the decay of the strain energy and of the internal stresses produced by a self-equilibrated axisymmetric torsional loading applied to one end of the body in the absence of other loads. Both solid and hollow (shell-shaped) bodies are treated. For the latter the decay in the mean twist is also estimated. (Author)
