APPLICATION OF A METHOD FOR APPROXIMATING EXTREMALS OF FUNCTIONALS TO COMPRESSIBLE FLUID FLOWS.

Abstract

A combination variational integral-finite difference technique for extremizing functionals numerically is applied to a fundamental, nonlinear subsonic flow problem. Not only is the flow pattern constructed, but estimates of the critical Mach number, speed, acceleration, and pressure are also obtained. The method is also applied to mark the emergence of a supersonic bubble in problems where this phenomenon occurs. (Author)
