PLASMA-ELECTRODE PHENOMENA OF THE RAIL TYPE ACCELERATOR,

Abstract

Real discharge effects are considered for the rail type electromagnetic accelerator with special emphasis devoted to electrode phenomena. Net plasma motion is shown to be independent of arc motion, which may occur in any of three modes. Experimental evidence is cited in support of a discharge model composed of multiple conducting paths in parallel with the main arc. Spectrographic experiments are described in which electrode erosion is found to be virtually nonexistent under conditions of sustained arc motion. (Author)
