OPTIMAL COMBINATION OF PROPULSION SYSTEMS,

Abstract

If two or more propulsion systems are jointly installed on a space vehicle, it is necessary to know the conditions of their optimal combination. In the paper there is considered a method of solving the variational problem of the optimal combination of arbitrary propulsion systems, and a study is made of the problem of the optimal combination of engines of limited exhaust velocity with engines of limited power. The weight of an engine of limited exhaust velocity is considered as being proportional to the maximum thrust; the weight of an engine with limited power is assumed in one case to be proportional to the maximum power, and in another case to be equal to the sum of two terms, one of which is proportional to the maximum power and the other to the maximum thrust.
