LABORATORY AND DEMONSTRATION HEAVY-PARTICLE ACCELERATORS,

Abstract

Proton Accelerator-Discharger: The proton tube with a lithium target makes possible checking the relationship E = mc squared by measuring the scattering of alpha particles in the nuclear reaction between lithium and hydrogen to give helium. The identification of alpha particles with the aid of a scintillation counter is accomplished by fixing a sharp drop in the impulses as a result of drawing the counter away from the cathode. DEUTERIUM ACCELERATOR-DISCHARGER: An aluminum anode, a deuterium target, and heavy water are used. A flux of hydrogen nucleii is obtained to bombard the cathode. The neutrons obtained should be counted by a scintillation counter.
