OXYGEN CONVULSIONS IN MAN,

Abstract

Seventy examples of acute cerebral oxygen toxicity were described. Twenty-five had convulsions as the first clinical manifestation of the toxicity, ten had focal twitching, and thirteen more progressed to convulsions in spite of attempted immediate therapy. The convulsions were self-limited if the p02 was reduced to non-toxic pressures. The morbidity was minimal with retrograde amnesia as the only deficit that persisted beyond 24 hours. No deaths occurred in this series. Re-examination of the clinical data revealed only one instance where more careful pre-exposure selection may have prevented the convulsion. All exposures were at less than three atmospheres absolute, and all but four were for thirty minutes or less. (Author)
