INTERPRETATION OF THE FIRST-ORDER CORRECTION TO THE MAGNETIC MOMENT INVARIANT,

Abstract

In the study of the permanence and stability of the Van Allen radiation belts and in studies of mirror machines, it is of particular importance to understand the nature and behavior of the adiabatic invariants of the particle motion. It is shown that the first-order correction to the 'magnetic moment' M or 'first adiabatic invariant' has a simple physical interpretation, and two simple expressions are shown for it.
