CYCLOTRON WAVE DEVICES STUDY.

Abstract

A small-signal coupled-mode analysis of the cyclotron -synchronous wave amplifier has been carried out including the transverse modes and force-free modes. The small-signal gain and spent-beam characteristics have been investigated, as well as the coupling of the beam modes in a Cuccia coupler. A computer program has been carried out to investigate the d-c beam effects in a cyclotron-synchronous wave pump circuit. Experiments on the cyclotron-synchronous wave amplifier have consistently shown low gain with appreciable pump interception. These results are understood in terms of d-c beam behavior in the pump structure. An extensive computer analysis of a cyclotron-wave power converter has been carried out including the effects of d-c space-charge forces. These results consistently predict high conversion frequencies, of the order of 80 n performed on an S-band 3-watt cyclotron-wave power converter and efficiencies of the order of 25 per cent have been obtained. The low efficiencies obtained experimentally as contrasted with the high theoretical efficiencies are due to a loss of beam current. (Author)
