INVESTIGATION OF THE USEFULNESS OF A FIBERGLASS BARREL,

Abstract

A fiberglass gun barrel was instrumented for strain measurements and for chamber pressure measurements. X-ray shadowgraphs were taken of each projectile as it traveled down the barrel. High speed movies (black and white and color) were taken observing that half of the barrel toward the muzzle during the time the flame could be expected in that region. The experiment indicated that such a barrel might be an invaluable tool in studying the ballistics of that relatively unknown region with the barrel. (Author)
