OBSERVATIONS ON SOME INSTINCTIVE ACTIONS RELEASED BY ELECTRIC STIMULATION IN THE FOREBRAIN OF THE PIGEON (COLUMBA LIVIA).

Abstract

Electric stimulation of the forebrain of unanesthetized, freely moving pigeons has been carried out by use of permanent electrodes. Qualitative and quantitative observations have been made on the induced behavior, special attention being paid to sexual responses and defense and escape reactions, in order to obtain information about the central regulation of these behaviors in birds. Three actions belonging to the reproductive behavior were obtained as responses to stimulation namely, the bowing action, the nest demonstration and displacement preening. The different behavior items were obtained as stimulation effects both in males and females but the bowing action was induced in considerably more males than femalses.
