DIURNAL VARIATIONS OF DENSITY, PRESSURE, AND TEMPERATURE IN THE ATMOSPHERE,

Abstract

According to the author the theory of diurnal fluctuations in the atmosphere is unsatisfactory at present. A short description of interpretations by Harris and Priester on this theme (diurnal fluctuations) is given. The author proposes another way to solve the problem which is based on the theory of tides in the atmosphere. The proposition is discussed at some length and is analyzed mathematically. In conclusion, the author admits that the theory requires further refinements, but preliminary results already indicate a complicated dependence of the amplitude and phase on the height in the interval from 100 to 200 km; this indicates that the dynamic characteristics of this region of the atmosphere have an important influence on the processes taking place in these layers, thus creating, so to speak, 'boundary conditions' for them, i.e., the energy balance of the upper atmosphereis determined not only by absorption of solar radiation and by heat conductivity, but also by the fluctuating properties of the atmosphere.
