A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS IN SELECTED HOSPITALS IN BEXAR COUNTY, TEXAS,

Abstract

The purpose of the report is to present the results of a comparative study of hospital volunteer programs in selected hospitals located in Bexar County, Texas. In addition, trends and patterns revealed by researching literature pertaining to hospital volunteer programs were related to the study in order to discover what similarities or differences exist. The study is limited to determining answers to the following questions: (1) Does hospital size, ownership, and type, or length of patient stay influence the extent of volunteer services provided. (2) How and to what extent do hospitals utilize volunteers. (3) How are volunteer programs organized. (4) Do programs with full-time, salaried directors operate differently from those with volunteer directors. (5) Who does volunteer work in the hospital.
