THE FUTURE OF THE NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATIONS,

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to present a brief analysis of the nonprofit corporation role with a view to clarifying some of the policy questions at issue. The emphasis will be more on formulating the right questions than attempting authoritative answers. With a clearer understanding of the origins of the not-for-profit corporations, the different uses to which the device has been put, and the actual as opposed to the imagined failings or achievements, it should be possible to assess more realistically how this organizational form may evolve in the American governing system (and whether it should be desired to encourage or discourage any particular evolution).
