ANALYTIC SOLUTION OF A SPECIAL GUN PROBLEM

Abstract

The motion of a projectile in a gun barrel is prescribed so that the motion of the gas in the part of the barrel adjacent to the projectile is given by a simple analytic function. Analytic methods involving the hodograph transformation are employed to determine the motion of the gas in the remaining portion of the barrel. The procedures are carried out explicitly in the case gamma = 5/3.
