THE APPLICATION OF CARROLL'S TECHNIQUE TO COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN.

Abstract

Network synthesis and transfer-function estimation are considered as parameter-estimation problems. Particular emphasis is given to the synthesis of linear electrical networks. To minimize the desired error measure, iterative gradient techniques are used to adjust the parameters automatically. Constraint equations to insure physical realizability are handled by means of Carroll's nonlinear programming technique. This technique transforms the minimization-with-constraints problem into an unconstrained minimization problem. The result is an automatic procedure which requires the designer's experience in setting up the problem but uses the digital computer to perform the tedious labor.
