PROJECT FIRE MODEL: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MODEL FIRES.

Abstract

The main objectives of the experimental work described in the report were (1) to gain more knowledge of the structure of freeburning fires, (2) to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms of fire spread, and (3) to determine the significance of some of the many independent variables in fire spread. Although it was not possible to predict the behavior of large-scale fires from the crib and pool fires used in this study, the information gained from these tests was essential for work now underway in the development of scaling laws and in determining the characteristics that a model fire should have. The report deals primarily with the physical characteristics such as rate of spread, fuel burning rate, flame length, flame temperature, and flame velocity of crib and pool fires. It also considers the possible effects of wind speed and slope on the residence time and the unit area burning rate--two basic fuel bed parameters. Some results of work now in progress on scaling law development is summarized briefly. (Author)
