THE MUTUALITY OF STATIC AND KINETIC FRICTION.

Abstract

An experiment was performed, the object of which was to observe directly the dependence of static friction force magnitudes upon the static contact time. Not only was there a complete lack of evidence that such a time-dependency exists, but in addition there were no static or starting friction forces which were observed to be greater than all the forces observed during subsequent sliding contact. A possible explanation for the contrary observations is given and is supported by results of a second experiment in which extensive sliding contact on a microscopic scale was observed prior to gross (visible) sliding.
