SOLVENT ISOTOPE EFFECTS FOR CH3OH VS. CD3OH.
Abstract
A precise (hopefully approaching plus or minus 0.1%) method of determining solvent isotope effects for competitive methanolysis reactions of alkyl halides (and other compounds) in mixtures of methanol (CH3OH) and methan-d3-o1 (CD3OH) is being developed. The method utilizes gas chromatographic separation of very small amounts of reaction product followed by mass spectrometric analysis of the isotopic ratios in the product. Careful control experiments are necessary to insure accuracy and high precision. The results are expected to provide detailed information about the activation process for solvolysis reactions.
