THE HOMOGENEOUS GAS PHASE KINETICS OF REACTIONS IN THE HYDRAZINE-NITROGEN TETROXIDE PROPELLANT SYSTEM

Abstract

A number of different homogeneous gas phase reactions arising from the possible combinations of the fuels: hydrazine, ammonia, hydrogen, and decomposed hydrazine with the oxidizers: nitrogen dioxide, oxygen, nitric oxide, and decomposed nitrogen dioxide were investigated in the same adiabatic flow reactor at temperatures falling between 800K and 1300K. Heats of reaction, reaction orders, and reaction rates were determined. From the measured reaction rates, Arrhenius rate constants were calculated and overall activation energies determined. Based on the experimental observations and the work of other investigators on related reactions, reaction mechanisms were postulated.
