POLYNOMIAL APPROXIMATIONS TO FUNCTIONALS IN THE THEORY OF MATERIALS WITH MEMORY.

Abstract

For a material with memory, the functional phi which relates the stress to the strain history may sometimes be usefully approximated by a polynomial in the elements of a space L of linear functionals on the space F of strain histories. This paper extends an earlier result of Chacon and Rivlin (ZAMP, 15:444 (1964)) to prove such approximations possible on all bounded sets in the given topology for F, for all functionals phi uniformly continuous in the weak topology on F defined by L.
