A CRITICAL SURVEY OF LITERATURE CONCERNING THE TOMS' EFFECT.

Abstract

Literature on the Toms' effect, i.e., greatly increased flow rate of dilute polymer solutions occurring with small increases in solute concentration, is examined. Several existing theories dealing with the phenomena are reviewed, appraised and modified. Work from related fields is analyzed for its applicability to the situation and an effort is made to suggest future lines of study. (Author)
