EFFECT OF WHOLE BODY X-IRRADIATION ON HEMOLYMPH PROTEINS OF LIMULUS POLYPHEMUS.

Abstract

Hemolymph of the 'horseshoe crab' Limulus polyphemus was studied by ultracentrifugation and paper electrophoresis. Immature and mature specimens of this species were subjected to whole body X-irradiation up to 60,000 r in a single dose. The number of components in the hemolymph and their sedimentation constants were estimated by ultracentrifugation. No consistent difference was found between the whole hemolymph of control and irradiated specimens. Separation of components by paper electrophoresis likewise did not show a consistent difference between hemolymph of control and irradiated animals. (Author)
