PLASTICS FOR HULL VIBRATION DAMPING.

Abstract

An improved damping material was developed that more than meets the Bureau of Ships specifications for damping of steel plate 3/8 in. thick. Designated 'Improved MRC-OG4,' it is a graphite/carbon black-filled, plasticized, polyvinyl chloride/acetate copolymer. 'Improved MRC-OG4' yields greater than 9% c/c sub o over 10F and a decade of frequency in addition to providing 3% or more of c/c sub o from 32 to 85F at 0.1 to 6 kcps. Improvements of the MRC-OG4 resulted from an improved processing technique. In addition, commercial extrusion of the MRC-OG4 demonstrated the feasibility of this forming method. The MRC-OG4 formulation was modified to include processing agents. Eight brands or grades of graphite were accepted for use in the 'Improved MRC-OG4.' (Author)
