THE PROCESSES OF RECENT SEDIMENT FORMATION IN THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL PARTS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN.
Abstract
The paper discusses the composition of sediments and rate of sedimentation in (1) the arid and (2) the tropical humid zones. Also the distribution of bottom sediments along meridional cross sections transecting the Indian Ocean are given. The meridional distribution of sediments is based on three cross sections: (1) from the Shaekleton Ice Shelf to the Ganges, (2) from Antarctic Continent (Station 188) to the Bay of Aden, and (3) from the Antarctic Continent to the southern tip of Africa. The data are based on investigation conducted during the 4 cruises of the Antarctic expeditions organized by the Academy of Sciences of USSR from 1955 to 1959. Six diagrams and two tables present numerical and grafical data on the distribution of sediments and the relief of ocean floor. The influx and role of major Asian rivers in the formation of sediments in various parts on the Ocean is pointed out, giving also climatological data which affect the sedimentation process. (Author)
