UPPER ATMOSPHERE RESEARCH USING AIRCRAFT.
Abstract
An existing airborne installation is described and its potentialities are outlined. The particular properties of a jet aircraft (movability, speed, altitude) combined with appropriate ionospheric sounding equipment (receivers, optical apparatus, magnetometer, and cosmic ray recorders) constitute a unique capability. After reviewing past results obtained from more limited airborne equipment, an outline of operations and objectives is given, pertaining to: Magnetic Shell Propagation, Arctic Radio Physics, Eclipse Effects, Dumping of Trapped Electrons, Equatorial Electrojet, Nuclear Detonation Effects, Ionospheric Drifts, Airglow and Cosmic Ray Surveys.
