ORTHONORMAL FILTERING APPLIED TO TARGET CLASSIFICATION.

Abstract

Orthonormal filters may be used in signal detection schemes to recognize a given input waveform. Based on the ability of orthonormal filters to recognize given waveforms, a target classification scheme is postulated. The mathematical background is developed and the postulate tested for echo waveforms obtained from a prolate spheroid model target. An orthonormal filter is simulated on an analog computer and the echoes, experimentally obtained for each one-half degree of target aspect, are processed. These tests show the orthonormal filter developed does recognize variations between echoes obtained for different target aspects. However, for the echoes processed in this investigation, the nrthonormal filter outputs are not slowly varying, single valued functions of target aspect. (Author)
