INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRONIC INTERACTION WITH OPTICAL RESONATORS FOR MICROWAVE GENERATION AND AMPLIFICATION.

Abstract

Several interactions are analyzed involving electron beams with novel resonators. The resonators are designed to have dimensions large compared with a free-space wavelength in order that the interactions be suitable for millimeter and submillimeter wave devices. An elliptic-hyperbolic resonator is analyzed and evaluated with the aid of a digital computer. The resonator produces a slow wave which can interact with a linear electron beam, however, the interaction is weak. The interaction between a linear beam and the TM resonances of a confocal mirror system is also investigated. This interaction, although stronger, is not of great interest. The interaction between a rotating beam and a TE sub n11 cylindrical cavity field is analyzed and found to be quite promising for short wavelengths. Interaction parameters are evaluated and the design and partial construction of an experimental device are discussed. (Author)
