FACTORS AFFECTING THE ELECTROPHILICITY AND NUCLEOPHILICITY OF REAGENTS.

Abstract

The apparent simplicity of the reactions of Malachite Green cation (bis-(p-dimethylaminophenyl), phenylmethyl cation) with nucleophilic reagents strongly recommends these reactions for use in the study of solvent effects on the reactivity of nucleophiles. The report summarizes a research program initiated to study the rates of the reactions of a series of Malachite Green cations with a number of nucleophilies in several dipolar aprotic solvents, and the same reactions in water for comparison.
