ON SIMILARITY SOLUTIONS OF UNSTEADY VISCOUS FREE-MIXING.

Abstract

Unsteady, incompressible, planar and axisymmetric, laminar free-mixing is investigated by a boundary layer type analysis with similarity methods. Four types of flows are considered; namely, the asymptotic symmetric wake wherein the equations are linearized with respect to velocity perturbations, the symmetric wake wherein velocity differences can be large, the jet issuing into a quiescent ambient, and the asymmetric wake, i.e., the merging of two semi-infinite planar streams. Similarity solutions are shown to exist in all but one of the aforementioned flows; the exception is the axisymmetric jet. Solutions of the asymptotic wake, the two-dimensional nonlinear wake and the two-dimensional jet are presented. (Author)
