ABSORPTION SPECTRA OF PEPTIDES AND PROTEINS IN THE ULTRAVIOLET.

Abstract

By various methods residue spectra were estimated for all of the amino acid residues commonly occurring in proteins and tentative comparisons os summed residue spectra with measured protein spectra were made for glucagon, insulin, ribonuclease, muramidase and bovine serum albumin at 205 millimicrons and 230 millimicrons. All of the calculated molar extinction coefficients at 205 millimicrons are within the range of 1.04 to 0.89 of the observed values whereas the corresponding rations at 230 millimicrons are within the range of 0.98 to 0.66. At neither wavelength do the differences correlate well with the helical content of the proteins determined by rotatory dispersion. (Author)
