SUMMARY OF ARL SYMPOSIUM ON MAGNETIC WIND TUNNEL MODEL SUSPENSION AND BALANCE SYSTEMS.

Abstract

This report includes a compilation of the papers presented at the Magnetic Wind Tunnel Model Suspension and Balance Symposium held at WPAFB, Ohio on 13 and 14 April 1966 and a summary of random but significant discussion items. Representatives of nine organizations presented fourteen papers on various facets of the magnetic suspension and balance system concept. The symposium was characterized by a free exchange of ideas and information on current activities. During the symposium, considerable evidence was presented to indicate that there are numerous test situations for which there are no other adequate wind tunnel suspension systems. Further, it is well accepted that the magnetic wind tunnel model suspension and balance system is fully suited to dynamic stability testing. There was general agreement concerning the performance capabilities which can be expected of these magnetic systems at the present and in the near future. The application of superconducting and supercooled materials, in the more distant future, offers the possibility of very large power savings. It is now quite evident that the magnetic suspension and balance system is no longer merely a laboratory curiosity; instead, it is rapidly taking its place as a useful aerodynamic testing tool.
