LOW VOLTAGE D-T NEUTRON SOURCE.
Abstract
The report is concerned with an analysis of the problems involved in the design and slection of equipment for the production of intense beams of 14-MeV neutrons. Since the aim is to achieve total neutron yields in excess of 10 to the 13th power/sec, a figure which considerably surpasses that commonly encountered with currently operating accelerators, it is necessary to extrapolate present performance to a considerable degree. Low-voltage accelerators in operation at the present time rarely produce DC beam currents in excess of 1 mA; currents of 600 micro amps. are considered 'high'. The production of neutron yields of 10 to the 13th power/sec will require beam currents greater than 10 mA. This is a significant increase and gives rise to problems of ion source design, source cooling, beam optics, target preparation, mechanical target des/gn, etc. These problems are analyzed individually and certain conclusions are reached and recommendations are made.
