PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE DIAGRAM OF PART OF THE SIO2-H2O SYSTEM.

Abstract

The PT-projection of the high temperature part of the system SiO2-H2O is based on experimental data. The results agree with the theoretically possible scheme of combination of stable and unstable invariant points in a n = -1 multisystem according to Korzhinskii. In case of low water concentration, quartz, as a stable phase, may coexist with the melt at temperatures above 1300C. Cristobalite and tridymite are unstable at pressures higher than about 2500 atm.
