ACCELERATION PROCESS IN THE HALL CURRENT DEVICE.

Abstract

A simplified analytical model of the flow process in a Hall current accelerator device is discussed. The initial acceleration from subsonic to sonic velocity (due to both Joule heating and a Lorentz force resulting from an ionizing current effect) leads to plasma temperatures and degrees of ionization of the same order of magnitude as those obtained from experiments. Examination of the expansion of the plasma in the magnetic nozzle shows that the energy of aximuthal motion of the plasma is transformed into axial directed energy. For hydrogen the final exhaust plasma velocity is about 100,000 m/sec. (Author)
