REFLECTION AND AMPLIFICATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES IN AN OSCILLATING IONIZED MEDIUM. PART I.

Abstract

Electromagnetic waves propagating in a semi-infinite ionized medium with the density varying periodically in time and space due to a progressive high power pump wave or some type of longitudinal wave are considered. The instability conditions are considered and it is found that the dispersive medium yields possibilities of traveling wave parametric amplification. All harmonics are taken into account as well as higher orders of self-consistent modes. The dispersion diagram is studied by means of coupled mode analysis and the interaction conditions are determined and analyzed to first order. The analysis is compared with a Mathieu-type analysis. Expressions for the reflection coefficients are given, and possibilities to obtain the different kinds of interaction discussed. (Author)
