Abstract

Fluorescence and infrared absorption of Sm(3+) in LaF3, by H. E. Rast and H. H. Caspers: The fluorescence spectrum was observed in the spectral range of 0.55 to 1.1 micrometer, and the infrared absorption spectrum was recorded from 0.90 to 10.0 micrometer. The two lowest terms, 6H and 6F, give rise to 12 spin-orbit split multiplets. Transitions have been observed terminnating on at least 10 of the 12 multiplets. The experimentally determined barycenters of the crystalline Stark components have been fitted to a 'free-ion' calculation of the energy levels in terms of the Slater integral F2 and Zeta(4f), assuming pure Russell-Saunders coupling. Continuous slot antenna, by; J. G. Hoffman: The perturbation of the waveguide phase constant caused by a continuous slot in the broad face of a waveguide is discussed. The effects of this perturbation are presented in graphical form, together with an analytical verification of the experimental results. (Author)
