PPX - A NEW DYEABLE POLYPROPYLENE FIBER.

Abstract

A laboratory dyeability evaluation of a new dyeable polypropylene fiber was made to determine its potential for military and civilian textile use. Disperse and premetallized dyes are applied by a simultaneous scouring and dyeing process. Disperse dyeings show good yield and fair to good fastness. Selected dyes give high brightness. The premetallized dyes, in light and dark shades, give level dyeings with good yield and very high fastness. Most surprising is the high affinity of the fiber for vat dyes. Applied by a simple process, vat dyes give good yield and brightness and exceptional fastness. The fiber is also dyeable with acid dyes. Analysis of the findings for the new dyeable polypropylene fiber, show it to have considerable promise to meet the processing and color performance requirements for a wide range of end uses, including exacting military applications.
