COUPLED WAVE EQUATIONS FOR MULTI-MODE INHOMOGENEOUS MEDIA.

Abstract

Wave propagation in multi (n-)- mode inhomogeneous media, quite generally is described by an n:th order wave equation with variable coefficients, or sometimes, especially in the case of 4-mode systems, by coupled, second order wave equations in total fields. It is shown how the propagation phenomena can be analyzed in terms of first order, coupled mode amplitude equations. These first order equations become especially simple when the system has symmetric, or anti-symmetric properties. Since the methods developed are completely general, they can be applied to a multitude of wave propagation phenomena, involving coupling between waves of very different physical nature. (Author)
