RESEARCH ON EXHAUST GAS EFFECTS ON HEAT EXCHANGERS.

Abstract

The objective of the research program was to determine fouling effects of gas turbine exhaust gases upon heat exchangers in heat recovery systems. The program included the design, manufacture, testing and evaluation of various heat exchangers. The parameters studied for effects were gas temperature and velocity, metal temperatures, fuel-air ration and fuel type. Also included in the program were investigations of cleaning techniques, surface coatings, distribution, surface roughness, inclination, configuration geometries, startup and shutdown effects, and analytical studies of transient and differential heat stresses. The overall conclusions are presented as design parameters for incorporation of fouling factors into the analysis of waste heat exchangers. Evaluation of results showed that gas velocity had the predominant effect upon fouling--the lower the velocity, the greater the fouling. Gas temperature effects were significant with more fouling had very little effect on the degree of fouling. As the fuel-air ratio increased, the fouling increased. Combat gasoline, a leaded fuel, fouled at higher rates than JP-4 fuel. (Author)
